In the first phase, 10 buses left the Ukhia Degree College campus at 11:30 am on Thursday. Later, 10 more buses were seen leaving around 1:15 pm.
The RAB, police and law enforcement agencies were observed to provide tight security in front of and behind the buses carrying Rohingya.
When asked about this, Lt. Col. Ashiq Billah, Director, Media Wing, RAB, told bdnews24.com: The rest can be said by interested officials.
However, officials from the Office of the Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation have not officially commented on how many Rohingya are being taken to Bhasanchar by buses.
Locals said the Rohingya were taken to the Ghumdhum transit camp adjacent to the Kutupalong camp in Ukhia on Wednesday night for relocation to Bhasanchar. Dozens of buses gathered on the Ukhia Degree College campus that night.
Abul Kalam, a local grocer, said he had seen 20 buses carrying Rohingya leave campus in two phases since Thursday morning.
Law enforcement agencies have taken extensive security measures from the Ghumdhum transit camp to the Ukhia Degree university campus area. Restrictions have also been placed on the movement of ordinary people there.
“All preparations are underway to relocate a group of Rohingya to Bhasan Char in the next 8 to 10 days,” said Mohammad Samchu Ddouza, additional commissioner of the government’s Office of Refugee Aid and Repatriation.
Two years ago, the government planned to relocate a portion of the 1.1 million Rohingya living in and out of Cox’s Bazar refugee camp to the island of Bhasan Char in the Meghna estuary near Hatiyar.
At a cost of Tk 2,312 million rupees with the government’s own funding, infrastructure has been established in 120 cluster villages in the 13,000 acre char to accommodate more than one lakh of people.
More than three hundred Rohingya who had not returned to Malaysia were rescued from the sea and brought to Bhasanchar earlier.
Then, on September 5, a delegation of Rohingya from the Cox’s Bazar refugee camp was sent to Bhasan Char to visit.
After their return, some Rohingya expressed interest in going to Bhasan Char, according to government officials.
However, several international organizations, including the UN refugee agency, have distanced themselves from the government’s initiative.
The United Nations said in a statement Wednesday that it had no involvement in the government’s plan to evacuate the Rohingya.
The statement also called on the government to ensure that the Rohingya are able to make informed decisions on the Bhasan Char issue.
“The United Nations has not been involved in the preparatory process for this relocation, nor in the process of identifying refugees,” he said. The United Nations does not have enough information about the transfer process in general. “
Human rights regulator Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a statement on Thursday that it had stopped moving Rohingya to Bhasanchar.
