The first group of Rohingya refugees displaced from Myanmar to take refuge in Bangladesh departed for Bhasanchar in Noakhali.

The Rohingya began their journey in 10 buses from the Ukhia Degree College grounds in Cox’s Bazar around 11 a.m. Thursday. They will first take them to the Chittagong naval base. Later, from there, 14 navy ships will be brought to Bhasanchar.

No government or private official wants to discuss the issue directly. However, Shamsuddoza, additional commissioner of the Office of the Rohingya Refugee Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) in Cox’s Bazar, told the media: “We have all the preparations for the Rohingya to leave and stay in Bhasanchar.”

An official who worked with the refugees on condition of anonymity said: “The Rohingya have been selected from some 34 refugee camps. They are going to Bhasanchar voluntarily. All arrangements will be made for them to leave and stay there.

When asked how many Rohingya are in the first group, the official said there are 250 to 300 Rohingya in the first group.

There are currently more than 11 lakh of Rohingya asylum seekers in Bangladesh. Most of them entered Bangladesh after August 25, 2016 to save their lives from the brutal operation by the Myanmar security forces. Most of them are in various refugee camps along the coast.

Earlier on August 24, Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen said that the government wanted to start relocating Rohingya to Bhasanchar soon. Then, on October 16, the foreign minister said. “We are under pressure from UNHCR and other NGOs not to send Rohingya to Bhasanchar,” AK Abdul Momen told reporters.

European Union (EU) ambassador Ren র Terink said at a meeting organized by the Organization of Diplomatic Journalists (DACAB) at a hotel in the capital yesterday that the European Union would not comment in advance on the situation before the UN Technical Committee assess the relocation of the Rohingya to Bhasanchar. He added: “The European Union has no objection if the Rohingya go to Bhasanchar voluntarily and the UN does not object. But we will wait until the UN technical committee evaluates.

On the other hand, the UN said in a statement that it was not involved in the preparations for the relocation of the Rohingya to Bhasanchar or in the process of identifying refugees.
