Last minute preparations are under way to transfer thousands of Rohingya to Bhasanchar in Noakhali to ease pressure on Cox’s Bazar. Relevant sources in Dhaka, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar say that if all preparations go well, the relocation of the Rohingya to Bhasanchar could start from Friday. About 3,000 Rohingya have voluntarily agreed to go to Bhasanchar due to a better environment, infrastructure and planned facilities than Cox’s Bazar. About 2,500 Rohingya can be relocated from them in the first phase.

Those interested in moving to Bhasanchar are known to be taken to Chittagong by bus from Cox’s Bazar. From there they will be transferred by boat.

Meanwhile, the UN statement did not mention any direct opposition to the relocation of the Rohingya. “The United Nations has not been involved in any pre-relocation activity or in the refugee identification process,” he said. The UN does not have enough information about the transfer process in general.

However, other diplomatic missions in Bangladesh, including the United Nations, are said to be aware of the process of relocation of the Rohingya to Bhasanchar. Luiz Donovan, information officer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said:

At a function of the European ambassadors at a hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday morning, journalists wanted to know if the Bangladeshi government had informed them about the Rohingya relocation to Bhasanchar. In response, the ambassador nodded in response. However, the ambassador of the European Union (EU), Rancha Tierring, did not comment.

The United Nations says it has always asked the Rohingya to make decisions based on relevant, accurate and up-to-date information and to make independent decisions, and it continues to do so in the current context.

The government brought a representative of the Rohingya leaders to the island last September to take a closer look at the facilities in Bhasanchar. They appreciated the island facilities at that time.

“The United Nations is committed to ensuring that all refugees who wish to move voluntarily to Bhasanchar have access to education, health care and livelihoods, as well as freedom of movement on the continent and all basic rights and services.” the UN said in a statement.

Last Sunday and Monday, Kaler Kantho’s representative visited Bhasanchar and saw representatives of at least 22 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) providing humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya. They said there are more facilities in Bhasanchar than in Cox’s Bazar. There are many opportunities, including education and health care.

There are questions from various quarters about how the UN has been emphasizing the right of movement and livelihoods of the Rohingya in Bangladesh, which has failed to stop the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar. However, the United Nations has said it is interested in continuing talks with the Bangladeshi government on Bhasanchar. The government has no objection to this either. Bangladesh has made a field visit to Bhasanchar from the UN Special Rapporteur on Myanmar.

The United Nations, however, said it was grateful for the generosity and humanitarian values that the government and people of Bangladesh have demonstrated in providing protection and shelter to the Rohingya. The United Nations remains committed to maintaining its partnership in providing humanitarian assistance to save the lives of millions of people.

According to government sources, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has provided safe haven for the Rohingya in Bhasanchar at her own expense. One lakh of Rohingya will get temporary shelter there.
