The United Nations has called on the government of Bangladesh to voluntarily relocate Rohingya from Myanmar’s Cox’s Bazar refugee camp to Bhasanchar.
A statement from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said: The United Nations urges the government of Bangladesh to honor its commitments.
The statement further said that the United Nations is committed to the right of independent, informed and up-to-date Rohingya refugees to make their own decisions on the matter of relocation to Bhasanchar.
The United Nations is emphasizing the fundamental rights of Rohingya who want to go to Bhasanchar and ensuring services on the island. Rights include the right to free movement on the continent, as well as access to education, health care and livelihoods.
The statement further said that since the announcement of the Bhasanchar project, the government of Bangladesh has offered to discuss with the UN government issues such as its most important policies, procedures and action plans. The UN wants to continue this discussion.
The United Nations urges the government to play an important role in assisting the government in an effective humanitarian program for the nearly 900,000 Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar. In addition, the United Nations is working to resolve the crisis in Myanmar, including the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya.
The United Nations commends the humanitarian values and generosity of the Government and people of Bangladesh in providing safety and shelter to the Rohingya. And the UN’s commitment to be a partner in the humanitarian cause of saving the lives of thousands of people and helping many more will continue.
According to official sources, the Bangladeshi government is transferring the first batch of Rohingya from Cox’s Bazar to Bhasanchar in the Bay of Bengal this month.
The Cox’s Bazar district has given shelter to more than 11 lakhs of Rohingya who have been forcibly displaced from their homeland. Most of them have taken refuge in the neighboring country to save their lives since Myanmar’s military crackdown began on August 25, 2016.
