A court ordered the execution of a young man in a digital trial for raping and killing a first grader in Rangpur. In addition to the death sentence, the judge also ordered a fine of one lakh rupees. Another man has pleaded not guilty to the charges against a woman.
Judge Mostafa Pavel Raihan of Rangpur Court 3 for Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. The defendants were present in court when the verdict was announced. The judge read the verdict to the people present through the projector at the courthouse. There was an overflowing crowd at the courthouse to hear the verdict.
According to the case and judicial sources, Tanjila Khatun Chumki, daughter of Dinamzur Shajahan Ali from Ramnathpur village in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur, was a first-class student at the local Duramithipur government primary school. On the day of the incident, on the afternoon of June 14, 2016, Chumki was playing next to the house. At that time, Riyadh Pradhan (then 20), the son of neighbor Momin Pradhan, took the boy home and raped him after showing the temptation to eat mango. After the girl screamed and the defendant Riad suffocated her for fear of being caught, the co-defendant, with the help of the maid Dhali Begum (then 50 years old), dug a hole in the ground and buried it in a bag of cement. . As evening approached, the girl did not return home, and anxiety among family members increased. Since that night, microphones have been performed in the area in search of the child. At one point, on the morning of June 17, Pirganj police arrived at the scene and arrested the defendant Riyadh along with recovering Chumki’s body from under the bed in the house. Dhali Begum fled after the incident. The police arrested him in Dhaka a few days later.

After investigating the incident, the investigating officer for the case filed a charge sheet in court on December 12 of that year. The case was framed on November 30, 2018. The judge announced the verdict on Tuesday after taking the testimony of 19 people after a 4-year trial. In addition to the death sentence, the judge also ordered a fine of one lakh rupees.
The plaintiff’s attorney, attorney Kawshar Ali, expressed his satisfaction that the verdict was announced in the people’s presence digitally. He set an example in Rangpur. He demanded that the verdict be implemented quickly.
Chumki’s mother, Sufia Khatun, and other family members expressed their satisfaction with the verdict.
