The admission test will be held in 19 general and science and technology universities in the country in a cluster system in the 2020-21 academic year. Last year, seven agricultural universities took the admission test in the group system. This time 19 public universities are added. These universities will take the direct admission test this time.

The decision was announced by the University Scholarship Commission (UGC) after a meeting with the vice-chancellors of the General and Science and Technology Universities on Tuesday. A meeting of the vice-chancellors of these 19 institutions will be held on December 19 at Jagannath University to decide on the group’s detailed admissions techniques.

The UGC will soon hold separate meetings with the universities of agriculture and engineering to announce its decision. However, Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University and Chittagong University have already said that they will not be coming for admission. Each of them will take the admission test separately. The rectors of these four universities were not summoned for yesterday’s meeting.

However, UGC expects that under the leadership of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), engineering universities will participate in the admissions process starting this year. In addition, the National University, the Open University and the Islamic Arab University have already admitted students on the basis of GPA.

According to the sources of the meeting, the admission test will be held in 19 general and science and technology universities in the country in a cluster system in the 2020-21 academic year. In this group, the humanities, business, and science will be tested on these three topics. There will be direct admission test in these public universities. The question papers will be prepared based on the upper secondary syllabus.

Most of the rectors at the meeting said that the incidence of corona is increasing in winter. Therefore, the date of the admission test should be determined taking into account the winter time. Without it, freshmen could not be promoted to second year as they would not be able to take the exam due to corona. Now if new students are admitted, there will be two batches of students in the first year. For this, several vice-chancellors proposed to promote the first-year students to the next class without exam.

The meeting was called by the joint coordinator of the University of Science and Technology and the Vice Chancellor of Jagannath University, Prof. Mizanur Rahman said that the Central Admission Test Committee comprising the Vice Chancellors will decide the admission test procedure for this group. The committee will give a score to the students on the admission test. The universities will issue notices in the newspapers about the admission of students indicating their respective conditions and requirements. Colleges will admit students with scores. No separate admission test will be taken.

At the meeting, UGC President Professor Kazi Shahidullah said there was no possibility for universities to withdraw from the admission test in a group system due to the crown. He urged the vice-chancellors to prepare for the admission test in a direct and simple way with students and parents in mind.
