A commander of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed in an airstrike. The attacker struck shortly after noon on the Iraq-Syria border. The identity of the slain commander was not disclosed.
Reuters reported that Iraqi security forces and local militia officials provided the information on Monday.
The report said Iraqi security forces and local militia officers could not confirm the identity of the slain commander. However, they said that three other people who were traveling in a vehicle with the commander also died.
Separately, two Iraqi security officials said the car was carrying weapons. The attacker struck shortly after noon in front of a Syrian military base. The two Iraqi security officials said members of the Iranian-backed Iraqi paramilitary group helped rescue the bodies. They did not give details of when and how the incident occurred.
Local military and militia sources confirmed the matter, but Reuters could not independently verify the information.
Previously, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, a well-known Iranian nuclear scientist and president of the Defense Ministry’s Research and Innovation Organization, was killed in a terrorist attack on Friday night. Armed terrorists attacked a vehicle carrying Fakhrizadeh on a highway in the town of Absard in Damavand county, near Tehran, on Friday night, the mass communications department of the Iranian Defense Ministry said.
At that time, the terrorists clashed with the bodyguards of the Iranian nuclear scientist and Fakhrizadeh was seriously injured. He died in the hospital.
