Her husband Rubel Hossain, 26, was sentenced to death for strangling Fatema Khatun, 19. Judge Moha of the Natore Court for the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children on Tuesday afternoon. Imdadul Haque passed the sentence. Rubel Hossain is the son of Khokon Munshi from the village of Shibpur in Baraigram upazila of Natore.
The court sentenced the accused to death and a fine of one lakh rupees. He has also ordered the district fundraiser to collect the money from the convict and present it to the court in order to hand it over to the parents of the murdered Fatema Khatun within the next six months.
Anisur Rahman, Special Prosecutor (APP) of Natore’s Abuse of Women and Children Court, said the convict was present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced. After the verdict, he was sent to Natore Jail. The verdict was announced within three years of the incident. In the case, 10 state witnesses appeared. The accusation against the defendant that he had strangled his newly married wife, Fatema Khatun, has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The verdict, subject to Superior Court approval, ordered the defendant to be hung with a rope around his neck until his death. However, the verdict states that the defendant can appeal the sentence in the higher court within the next seven days. Previously, the court had acquitted three other defendants in the case, Jewel Hossain, 26, Khokon Munshi, 55, and Baby Begum, 22.
