In a press release, they said that information recovered from the computer during the raid on the resort in Bandarban and its central office in Banani, Dhaka, at the same time on Monday, was ‘evidence of VAT evasion’.

However, bdnews24.com could not learn of the resort authorities’ statement in this regard.

Deputy Director of the VAT Intelligence Department. Mohiuddin led an operation at the Chimbuk Road complex, some 26 km from Bandarban. At the same time, a raid was carried out at the Sairu Hill Resort Limited head office on the 14th floor of Safura Tower on Kamal Atartuk Avenue in Banani, Dhaka, under the direction of Deputy Director Tanvir Ahmed.

According to the press release, detectives retrieved the resort’s actual sales information from 2016 and seized the information from the computer. It can be seen that they have shown sales of 11 lakh 39 thousand taka on November 15 last year. 1 lakh 60 thousand VAT has been paid at the standard rate of 15 percent on this sale. A further taka 30,000 has been paid as VAT at the rate of 7.5 per cent on sales of 4 lakh taka without standard rate.

“But the information retrieved shows that sales for that month were Tk 1.29 crore.” The VAT payable at a rate of 15 per cent on these sales is Tk 19.46 lakh, which means that the total sales, including VAT, are Tk 1.48 million rupees. Based on this calculation, the VAT evasion in October 2020 alone is about 16 lakh 47 lakhs.

The VAT Intelligence Department claimed that the investigation had found “VAT evasion information” from the complex authorities in other months as well. But according to actual sales, VAT is applied at around Tk 15 lakh per month.

“It has been shown to the VAT intelligence team that the Sairu authorities collected VAT from buyers but did not properly deposit it in the government treasury. They have benefited financially by evading VAT.”

A case in this regard will be shelved after further investigation, said the VAT Intelligence Department.
