BNP leaders and activists have protested against the renaming of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman High School in the Mogaltuli area of the Bangshal area in Old Dhaka.
Leaders and activists led by the BNP’s mayoral candidate, engineer Ishraq Hossain, started the procession from Bangshal Junction on Sunday. From there they went to the front of the school in the Mughaltuli area and protested. At this time, some agitated workers inked the school’s changed dog tag.
BNP Deputy Secretary General Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohail and engineer Ishraq Hossain evacuated the leaders and activists. Later, they held a street demonstration on the Nawabpur road.
Engineer Ishraq Hossain told the meeting that the school was established on March 25, 2008 in the name of Ziaur Rahman by the late Sadek Hossain Khoka, the mayor of undivided Dhaka. But the school has recently been renamed ‘Mogaltuli High School’ for political purposes. He expressed his annoyance at the name change of the school by the city corporation even though there was no demand from the locals or anyone.
BNP Dhaka Metropolitan South President Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel said that Ziaur Rahman’s name cannot be erased from people’s minds simply by changing his school name. Such heinous acts will not be accepted by the common people of the country. The BNP leader said that the protest that has started will continue.
