Another railway bridge is being built over the Jamuna River parallel to the ‘Bangabandhu Bridge’. The name of the new bridge is ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge’. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for the long-awaited bridge in the north on Sunday. As a result, a new communication horizon opens with the north, including the capital, Dhaka. In particular, the bridge will play an important role in the easy transport of passengers, as well as in the transport of goods by rail.
According to stakeholders, the 4.8 km long double lane railway bridge is being built 300 meters upstream from the Bangabandhu bridge. The bridge will be built at a cost of Taka 16,061 crore with joint funding from the Government of Japan and Bangladesh. JICA will finance and implement the Bangabandhu Railway Bridge project. Although the project is scheduled to be completed in December 2025, work will be completed in August 2024, said Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan.
This bridge will be able to circulate two trains simultaneously at a speed of 100 km / h. In addition, they will be able to operate all types of freight trains. This will save time as well as socio-economic development and expansion of trade in North Bengal. With this bridge, trains will be able to move quickly on different routes in the north, south and west.
With the launch of the Bangabandhu Bridge in 1996, the north and south-west rail link with the capital was introduced. Initially, four broad gauge and metropolitan trains were planned to cross eight times a day, but the number of trains running on the bridge increased due to increasing passenger demand. In 2006, due to a crack in the Bangabandhu Bridge, the speed limit of the trains running on the bridge was lowered.
One of the longest bridges in the country and the longest single rail bridge is to be built as one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country’s rail sector. According to stakeholders, the latest technology will be used in the construction of the Bangabandhu railway bridge. The bridge will be built with a steel frame instead of concrete. On both sides of the bridge, a 0.05 km viaduct, a 6.8 km rail access embankment and a 30 km loop and liner rail line will be built. Apart from this, two new buildings of the station will also be carried out, the development of the signaling and telecommunications system, the museum of the railway bridge, the bungalows, offices and residences of the officers and employees, as well as the river management works for the bridge.
The bridge authority has already turned over 431 acres of land to the railroads for the implementation of the rail bridge construction. Approximately 16 acres have been permanently transferred and approximately 262 acres of land have been temporarily transferred.
