Former BCL leader Sohel Rana was killed in an attack on Awami Women’s League president Chakaria Upazila of Cox’s Bazar and upazila vice president Jesse Chowdhury while attempting to occupy disputed land.
The attack took place in Hajipara in the Bharamuhuri area of Ward No. 4 of Chakaria Township around 1 am on Saturday (November 26). At least 10 people were injured on both sides, locals said.
Police arrested a man named Abdul Mannan (34) in connection with the incident. The Mannan arrested is the son of Kabir Ahmed from the Hajipara area.
The deceased was identified as Sohail Rana, son of local Abdur Rakim from the Palakata Hashem Masterpara area. He is the former joint convenor of the Chhatra League of the Chakaria Municipality. Sohail is known to have been married 24 days ago.

According to local sources, Jesse Chowdhury, president and vice president of the Chakaria Upazila Mahila Awami League, and Nurul Alam, a local contractor, had claimed ownership of 6% of the land in the Bharamuhuri area of the municipal city of Chakaria. The disputed land is in the possession of Nurul Alam.
There have been several meetings between the two parties to resolve the dispute. Although he was unable to produce any logical documents in support of the lawsuit, Awami League leader Jesse Chowdhury was adamant in claiming ownership of the land. In this context, the two parties were scheduled to meet again on Monday (November 30).
On condition of anonymity, some locals said that the leader of the Awami League, Jesse Chowdhury, sent a group of gunmen to occupy the site Saturday night. When Nurul Alam’s men tried to resist them, Jesse’s men opened fire. Several people from Nurul Alam’s side were injured. Although they fled the land out of fear, the locals were angered when they heard the sound of random gunfire in the dead of night. The locals gathered and attacked the armed occupants.
Jesse’s men fled when they saw the group of locals, but Sohail was trapped. Indignant people beat Sohail indiscriminately with native weapons from behind. Sohail was severely beaten. Upon receiving the news, the Chakaria police went to the scene and controlled the situation, rescued the injured and took them to hospital. There the doctor declared him dead.

To find out the matter, he contacted two mobiles used by the female leader Jesse Chowdhury. However, it was not possible to know his statement since both phones were switched off.
On the other hand, when the other owner of the land, Nurul Alam, was contacted on his phone, he also did not receive the call.
The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Chakaria Police Station, Saker Mohammad Jubayer, said: “After the autopsy, the funeral of the deceased was completed after the evening janaza. The victim’s family has yet to file a case. However, the police have already gone out into the field to catch those involved. Action will be taken against the culprits after proper investigation of the incident.
Meanwhile, after the autopsy, Sohail was buried in the local cemetery after Janaza in the afternoon. Tension rises in the area over the death of former BCL leader Sohail.
According to family sources, Sohail married Kali, the daughter of Pekua Krishak League leader Meher Ali, on November 4. On the 24th day of the marriage, the bride Kali lost her husband Sohail.
