At least 30 members of the security forces were killed in a car bomb attack on a military base in Afghanistan. The attack took place on Sunday. The country’s authorities say Sunday was one of the deadliest attacks in recent years in Afghanistan.

The attacker struck shortly after noon in front of a military base in Ghazni, the capital of Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, Reuters reported. The area is often the scene of clashes between Afghan government forces and the Taliban. However, the Taliban have not claimed responsibility for the attack. No other group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Another suicide bomber struck on Sunday in the city of Kalat in Zabul province. One died and at least 20 were injured.

The United States and the Taliban signed a peace agreement earlier this year to restore peace in Afghanistan and end two decades of violence. Peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban recently began in Doha, Qatar. Last week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also met with representatives of the Taliban and the Afghan government to speed up the talks. Such an attack took place in this situation.
