Local government minister Tajul Islam said this after a consultation meeting Thursday on “handing over canals to City Corporation to alleviate flooding in Dhaka city.”

“The technical committee will inform you within a month and the transfer process will begin after receiving the report,” he said.

The Managing Director of Dhaka WASA, Taksim A Khan, the Mayor of South Dhaka, Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh, and the Mayor of the North. Atiqul Islam participated in the meeting.

When it rains a little, the inhabitants of the city suffer from the accumulation of water on different roads in the capital. For this reason, Dhaka WASA is criticized. WASA and City Corporation have blamed each other for the problem.

Dhaka WASA has repeatedly said that it is not the responsibility of the company to drain the rainwater. In this context, proposals have been presented on various occasions to transfer responsibility for drainage to the Municipal Corporation.

Minister Tajul Islam said: “At today’s meeting various issues were discussed. Today’s main topic is that you are eagerly awaiting the Dhaka city drainage system and canals, whether they are delivered to the city corporation.

“I have said in the background that the City Corporation is responsible for working as is in the law. They are in charge of the management, cleaning and renovation of the drainage. But at one point, the responsibility was turned over to WASA by order of His Excellency the President. That’s why WASA has already done the job. “

He said: “Currently, two mayors of the city corporation are sincere for the welfare of the people. They want to be able to do this job better. “

Who will remove the water from Dhaka will be decided on Sunday.

The minister said that the water and sewerage works would be with WASA. We have reached a consensus in principle for this ”.

Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation. Atiqul Islam said: “We have agreed in principle to implement what we wanted and since there are many technical problems here.

“From the side of the people, we have agreed on the meeting that has been held to alleviate the suffering of the people, the waterlogging. We will try to protect people from flooding. “

The 80-foot canal in Kalsi is now five feet long, the northern mayor said, adding that the canals would be salvaged and upgraded with walkways and bike lanes on both sides.

Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, said: “A historic decision has been made to solve the long-standing accumulated problem.

Waterlogging: Tapas took the minister to the field challenging WASA-Paubo

“In 1986, the Public Interest Engineering Department was supposed to hand over this responsibility (drain) to the City Corporation, but it was not handed over to WASA. From then until today, the people of Dhaka have been in misery. for almost thirty years. With today’s decision we can start over. I am hopeful that soon we can bring the benefits to the people of Dhaka. “

When asked if this was an additional responsibility of the city corporation, Tapas said: “The people of Dhaka have elected two leaders. Because of that mandate, I have dared to give a solution to this problem to the people of Dhaka. I have undertaken this enormous task with all the adversities ”.

However, Dhaka WASA Managing Director Taksim A Khan does not see any failure here.

He said: “Letters have been given many times to deliver to Ekaj City Corporation but they were not accepted. This is not our failure. “
