Two more police officers have been suspended for allegedly helping to expel Sub-Inspector (SI) Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, the main defendant in the murder of Raihan Ahmed in Sylhet.
They are Kotwali Police Station Inspector (Investigation), Soumen Maitra, and Deputy Inspector (SI) for the First Investigative Officer of the Raihan murder case, Abdul Baten.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) BM Ashraf Ullah Taher told media on Wednesday that the two had been suspended. He said that an investigation committee was formed from police headquarters to find out who had helped Akbar escape. The two were suspended on November 16 on the recommendation of the committee. Previously, SI Hasan was suspended from the Bandarbazar ICT outpost for the same charge.
Raihan Ahmed, 33, a resident of Akhalia, died on the morning of October 11. He was reportedly tortured to death at the Bandarbazar outpost. That night, Raihan’s wife, Tamanna Akhter, filed a case under the Death in Custody (Prevention) Act.
After the case, an investigative committee of the metropolitan police investigated and found the truth of the torture. Four people, including Deputy Inspector (SI) Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, in charge of the outpost, were suspended on 12 October and three others were removed. Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, in charge of the Bandarbazar Police Station, escaped from Akbar’s custody on 13 October.
Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan was arrested on November 9 at the Kanaighat border in Sylhet.
Since Akbar escaped, there has been a lawsuit to identify those who helped him escape. After being captured, Akbar also told the crowd that he had fled on the advice of two senior officials.
After his arrest, Akbar was in custody for seven days by the Police Investigation Bureau (PBI). Although Akbar was presented in court on November 17 after his pre-trial detention, he did not give a confessional statement. Previously, the PBI arrested three ASI policemen Ashek Elahi, Officer Titu Chandra Das and Harunur Rashid and took them into custody. However, at the end of the preventive detention, they also did not give a confessional statement in court.
