To extend the Mass Rapid Transit-6 line from Motijheel to Kamalapur and to build a multimodal transportation hub, the Kamalapur railway station building will have to be demolished and rebuilt in a nearby location. The Bangladesh Railway and Metro Rail authorities have agreed on a new plan in this regard.
Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan told The Daily Star after a bilateral meeting on Tuesday that the existing station would be demolished under the new plan and a similar station would be built a little north.
He added that since it was an iconic facility, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would make the final decision to dismantle it.
He said: ‘The Metrorail authorities have accepted the new plan proposed by Kazima Corporation. We are taking this plan, now awaiting the approval of the Prime Minister.
A railway official who attended the meeting said, on condition of anonymity, that the Kamalapur station would have to be demolished and rebuilt 130 meters north of the existing site to implement the new plan.
He said: “If the existing plan is implemented, the station will be completely covered with the Mass Rapid Transit-6 structure. Even if the current plan is modified, a part of the station will still be covered, so there is no alternative but to build the station elsewhere.
Officials from Kazima Corporation, which leads the Kamalapur Multimodal Transport Hub working subgroup, raised the new plan at a meeting at Rail Bhaban yesterday.
