Greg Berkeley, the head of the New Zealand Cricket Board, has been elected the new president of the ICC, the governing body of world cricket. The vote in the election of president has been twice. Berkeley got 10 votes for the first time, but needed 11 votes to be elected according to the rules. Greg Berkeley was elected the new president with 11 votes in the second round.

Imran Khawaja of Pakistan ran as a candidate against Berkeley. Shashank Manohar resigned as ICC president on July 1 after serving two consecutive terms amid an outbreak of the corona virus. Since then, the post of director of the world’s top cricket body has been vacant for almost four months. However, before being elected the new president, MP Imran Khawaja was the acting president of the highest governing body of world cricket.

According to the rules, a total of 16 countries can elect their presidents by exercising their right to vote. However, if you get at least two-thirds (11 votes) of the 16 votes to be elected, it will be awarded to the winner. That’s why Berkeley didn’t win the first round by a 10-6 margin. He was subsequently elected ICC President by South Africa in the second round and was elected President of the New Zealand Cricket Board.

Although a lawyer by profession, Greg Berkeley has been the chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Board since 2012. He was also the chairman of the last Kiwi board. But now that he has taken over the ICC independently, he will have to resign from New Zealand. Berkeley was elected the second independent president of the ICC after Shashank Manohar.

The ICC has 12 full member countries, two associate members, one independent member and one voting for Khazar, who does not represent any particular country in the ICC.
