Rapes are on the rise in Pakistan and Prime Minister Imran Khan has agreed to legislation to prevent genital mutilation.

It emerged that at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, members of Imran Khan’s cabinet demanded that rapists be publicly hanged and chemically mutilated as punishment for rape.

Faizal Javed Khan, a lawmaker from Pakistan’s ruling Tehreek-e-Insaf party, said the bill will be tabled in parliament soon.

Meanwhile, the Pak government has yet to officially announce anything about it.

The new anti-rape law is known to have been drafted to address the issue of recruiting more police officers, establishing fast-track courts, and protecting witnesses. Imran described it as a “serious matter” and said it was the government’s duty to ensure the safety of its citizens. He also said that he would not tolerate any negligence in this regard.

During the cabinet meeting, the Pakistani prime minister further said that victims can file complaints without fear. The government has a responsibility to protect him and his family and to keep his identity secret.

A seven-year-old girl was raped and killed in Lahore in January 2016. The entire country protested against the incident and demanded strict laws for rapists.

Then in 2020, after raping a young woman in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, three young men walked naked down the street. The police arrested the main defendant on the torture charge, but then released him in exchange for money.

Despite promises at the time, the Pak government did not introduce any new laws. But in the face of increasing rape cases, Pakistan is going to introduce this new law this time.
