The Turkish Foreign Ministry has summoned the ambassadors of the European Union (EU), Germany and Italy in Ankara to protest the search for a Turkish merchant ship bound for Libya in the eastern Mediterranean.
Turkey first complained last Monday that members of the German navy had illegally searched and registered the Turkish merchant ship Roselin. A few hours later, the three ambassadors were summoned.
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said the search of the country’s ship near the Greek city of Peloponnese on Sunday was a complete violation of international law; Because no one has the right to conduct such searches in international waters.
Ministry spokesman Hamid Aksavi alleged that the country’s navy entered Roselin from a German naval warship “Hamburg” and held all sailors, including their captain, at gunpoint. However, when the Turkish government immediately complained to the European Union, the German navy abandoned the Turkish merchant ship, leaving the search operation unfinished.
Germany’s defense ministry has claimed that the country’s navy patrolled the Mediterranean Sea on behalf of the EU-designated “Irini” force. The “Irini” force has been formed to prevent the shipment of illegal weapons into war-torn Libya.
The German Defense Ministry said they went to search the Turkish ship on suspicion of weapons possession. But faced with obstacles from the ship’s sailors, they left their duties unfinished.
Turkish security sources said Roselin was transporting food and paint to Libya by boat.
