Singapore police arrested a young Bangladeshi on suspicion of conspiring to assassinate him. His name is Ahmed Faisal. The country’s Straits Times reported on Tuesday, citing a statement from Singapore’s Interior Ministry.
According to the report, Faisal had planned to go to Kashmir in addition to attacking members of the Hindu minority police in Bangladesh.
When asked about this, Saiful Islam, Deputy Commissioner of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said they were seriously investigating the matter.
Faisal is 26 years old. He was arrested on November 2. A preliminary investigation by the Singapore Department of Homeland Security found that he was motivated by religious extremism and wanted to carry out violent acts. He moved to Singapore from Bangladesh as a construction worker in early 2016. Inspired by the online campaign of the militant group IS based in the Middle East, he turned to extremism. However, the investigation revealed that he planned to attack in Bangladesh, not Singapore. He was specifically targeting members of the Indian police for the attack. Faisal opened fake accounts on social media to spread provocative information about the violence. He also picked up a knife that could be easily carried by folding it. He said he had picked up the knife to use for interrogation.
Singapore authorities are investigating at least 36 suspects in the wake of the recent violence in Europe. 23 of them are foreigners. The rest are Singaporeans.
According to reports from Singaporean media, 15 suspects from Bangladesh and one Malaysian have already been deported to their respective countries. Those Bangladeshis used to work there as construction workers. It is also believed that they were involved in the plot.
