The war between the two former Soviet countries over the Nagorno-Karabakh region has been going on for a long time. When Armenia occupied Nagorno-Karabakh in 1991, war broke out between the two countries.
More than 30,000 people died in that war. The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.

The war was subsequently stopped by agreement, but on September 26 the two countries reengaged in the war. Later, Armenia was forced to sign a treaty with Azerbaijan on November 10, mediated by Russia.

In this 44-day war, Baku liberated more than 300 settlements and areas.

The agreement became known as a document of victory for Azerbaijan and defeat for Armenia. Turkey has supported the agreement.
