Turkey has summoned the ambassadors of the European Union (EU), Germany and Italy in Ankara to protest the search for a merchant ship.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry took up the protest on Monday (November 23). Earlier, the country said that members of the German navy had registered a Turkish merchant ship, the Roselin, bound for Libya in the eastern Mediterranean.
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the search for the Rozelin ship near the Greek city of Peloponnese on November 22 violated international law. Because no one has the right to conduct such searches in international waters.
Ministry spokesman Hamid Aksavi said the country’s navy entered Roselin from the German navy warship “Hamburg” and held all sailors, including their captain, at gunpoint. However, when the Turkish government immediately complained to the European Union, the German navy abandoned ship, leaving the search operation unfinished.
However, the German Defense Ministry claimed that the country’s navy patrolled the Mediterranean Sea on behalf of the EU-designated ‘Irini’ forces. IRINI forces have been formed to prevent illegal arms shipments in Libya ravaged by civil war. The Turkish navy went to search the ship because it was suspected of having weapons.
But the German Defense Ministry claimed that the troops emerged unscathed from the ship in the face of obstacles from the sailors.
According to sources in Ankara, food and dyes were transported to Libya on the ship ‘Roselin’.
However, Turkey has long been involved in the Libyan civil war. Turkey has sent troops to Tripoli on behalf of the internationally recognized government. Forces loyal to the self-proclaimed Commander General Khalifa Haftar fight against that government.
