The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has demolished illegally occupied structures on the banks of the Buriganga in Old Dhaka, including MP Haji Selim. The operation lasted from 11 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. on Monday. Hours before Sunday, several illegal facilities in his possession were evicted. In the second day’s operation, BIWTA authorities demolished more than 100 illegal structures, including those occupied by Dhaka-6 MP Haji Selim. However, Chan Sardar Cold Storage, owned by Haji Selim, was not evicted due to the presence of raw materials.

During the operation, illegal structures were demolished in the area adjacent to the Babubazar Bridge in Soarighat. BIWTA Executive Magistrate Mahbub Jamil led the operation. Dhaka River Port Deputy Director (Port) Gulzar Ali, Deputy Director Rezaul Karim and other officials were present at the time.

Monday’s raid evacuated more than a hundred facilities west of the sand dunes next to Mitford Hospital. In addition, several transport offices built under the Haji Selim umbrella have been evicted. However, the illegally constructed ‘Chan Sardar cold storage’ in place of BIWTA was not evicted. Cold storage authorities said it would decompose on its own after having raw materials inside.

When asked about the non-demolition of Haji Selim’s cold storage, Gulzar Ali, deputy director (port) of the Dhaka River Port, said that traders had raw materials inside the cold storage. Therefore, it was not broken at the request of the storage authority. However, after removing the merchandise, they promised to break it themselves, he said.

By the way, Haji Selim’s close associates had set up illegal structures in place of the river in the Badamtali area. The eviction campaign started from Waizghat to the Badamtali area last Sunday. Up to 160 facilities were demolished during Sunday’s operation. At least three acres of riverbank land was reclaimed.
