Full speech by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the nation

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Assalamu Alaikum.

On the occasion of Armed Forces Day-2020, I extend my sincere greetings to the people of the country, including each member of the three Armed Forces.

Due to the coronavirus epidemic, it was not possible to hold a reception in Senakunj this year as in other years due to health risks. However, virtually and following hygiene rules, the forces have organized the event in their own way.

On this great day, I pay my respects to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest father of the Bengali nation of all time, in response to whose call the Bengali nation bravely fought and seized independence. I respectfully remember the four national leaders. I remember 3 million martyrs and 2 lakhs of tortured mothers and sisters from the liberation war. My regards to the freedom fighters.

Today, this day occupies a special and glorious place in the history of our great war for independence. On that day in 1971, intrepid members of the army, navy and air force jointly launched a coordinated attack against the Pakistani occupying forces. Faced with a combined attack, the enemy forces were forced to surrender. The final victory was achieved on December 16. The nation always remembers with great respect the great sacrifices and heroism of the members of the Armed Forces in the War of Liberation.

Dear compatriots,

The armed forces that were born on a small scale through the great liberation war have today become a large organization. Shortly after independence, the Father of the Nation realized the need for a well-developed and professional armed force. To that end, he formulated a defense policy in 1974.

With limited resources in the war-torn country, Bangabandhu established the Bangladesh Military Academy, Combined Arms School, and a separate training center for each army corps in 1972.

Bangabandhu also opened three Bangladesh Navy bases in Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna. Warships collected for the navy of India and Yugoslavia. In 1983, it added sophisticated equipment to the Air Force, including the then supersonic MiG-21 fighter jets, helicopters and transport planes, and air defense radars.

Today, on the eve of the golden jubilee of independence, the professionalism and effectiveness of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, which rests on the solid foundations of the National Defense Policy formulated by the Father of the Nation, has been extended by the whole country.

Dear compatriots,

Members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces are performing their duties with the utmost devotion and selflessness at any time in the country. As a front-line combatant against the Kovid-19 epidemic, the Bangladesh Army has implemented “lockdown operations” in all parts of the country. Awareness is being raised among the general public about the prevention of epidemics and quarantine centers are being established and operated for people coming from abroad.

Additionally, the medical management of the Dhaka Combined Military Hospital’s coronavirus has been praised around the world beyond the country’s borders. During the Crown period, various activities of the Bangladesh Army to help the needy and defenseless have also been highly appreciated.

To cope with the coronavirus situation, the Bangladesh Navy is working to maintain social distance, ensure mandatory home quarantine, and provide humanitarian assistance to needy and vulnerable families.

To cope with Corona’s situation in the Maldives, warships sent medical supplies provided by the Bangladeshi government.

In addition, the Bangladesh Navy ship ‘Vijay’ deployed to the United Nations distributed food and relief items to Bangladeshi families living in Beirut, Lebanon. Our Air Force helicopters have relocated a significant number of patients from remote areas of the country, including representatives of the people, doctors, teachers and eminent people, to Dhaka for better treatment.

The Bangladesh Air Force has operated 18 flights for the repatriation of nationals and foreigners stranded in the Corona situation. Furthermore, the Bangladesh Air Force sent a medical team from the Bangladesh Armed Forces to the Maldives to provide crown medical services to the Bangladeshis stationed in the Maldives and conduct humanitarian activities there after the horrific explosion in Lebanon.

Members of our Armed Forces have demonstrated experience in conducting rescue and relief operations in the event of any natural disaster in the past. The Armed Forces have also been making important contributions to the development of the country’s infrastructure.

A significant number of members of the armed forces have been infected with the coronavirus and several have died. I pray for the forgiveness of the souls of the deceased and extend my deepest condolences to the families. I wish those who are sick a speedy recovery.

Members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces have illuminated the image of Bangladesh abroad by performing their duties with efficiency and dedication in UN peacekeeping missions. This year, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, we have once again achieved the distinction of being the highest peacekeepers in the world. I pray for the forgiveness of the souls of the Bangladesh peacekeepers who died in the line of duty.

An officer at the rank of Major General of the Bangladesh Army has already been appointed as Deputy Force Commander in the UN peacekeeping mission and the process for appointing an officer at the rank of Major General or Lieutenant General. as Force Commander is on the march.

Dear members of the Armed Forces,

Our foreign policy is guided by the motto of the Father of the Nation, ‘Friendship with all, no enmity with anyone’. We believe in peaceful coexistence with all neighboring states. However, we are always ready and determined to protect the sovereignty of the country from any aggressive attack. With that goal in mind, we have formulated the Forces Goal-2030 in light of the 1974 Bangabandhu Defense Policy. As it continues, the armed forces are being restructured organizationally, provided with advanced training, and equipped with specialized military equipment.

Over the past decade, we have enriched all branches of the military with modern weapons and equipment. I want to say firmly that the amount of modernization of the military during our administration’s tenure has never been greater in the past.

During the Awami League rule, two infantry brigades, 10 infantry divisions in Ramu, 18 infantry divisions in Sylhet, a brigade composed for the security and supervision of the Padma bridge project, 10 battalions in addition to the Special Works Organization, NDC, Bipst, AF Important institutions such as IST, NCO Academy and the Bangladesh Infantry Regiment Center have been established.

Sophisticated equipment has been installed in the country’s military hospitals to guarantee quality services. The Army Information Technology Support Organization has established itself in the military as part of building a digital Bangladesh and to enhance its skills in modern warfare.

To increase the capacity of the Bangladesh Navy, various projects have been undertaken, including the IFF Readiness Project, mine torpedo development and weapons development. The Bangladesh Air Force is steadily moving towards cyber security and network-centric warfare by developing state-of-the-art software through its own experts.

Army housing projects, improved logistics, and multi-story government family homes have been built to improve the standard of living for members of the armed forces. The allowance for defenseless martyred / killed / retired widows from the army has been increased by 50 percent.

The cash license fee for officers, JCOs and other ranks of the Bangladesh Armed Forces has been increased from 12 to 18 months. The pensionable tenure of the JCO and other positions has been set at 10 years instead of 15 years. The death and permanent disability compensation subsidies have been increased for members of the JCO and other ranks of the Armed Forces.

Our government was the first to recruit women into the armed forces. Since last year, five female members of the military have been promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and have served as commanders of front-line combat units.

For the first time in the Bangladesh Army, Brigadier General Nurunnahar Fatema Begum received the highest state medal from the Government of Bangladesh ‘Swadhinata Padak-2019’ in recognition of her glorious and meritorious contribution in the field of medicine. For the first time in our government, women have been recruited into the Air Force.

Dear members of the Armed Forces,

Bangladesh is a household name in today’s socio-economic development field. Even though many developed and emerging economies are facing negative growth due to the coronavirus epidemic, our growth rate has increased to 5.24 percent. Our expat income, agricultural production, and export trade have changed. Foreign exchange reserves have exceeded £ 41 billion. In this situation, we have to carry out our economic activities in accordance with sanitary regulations. Inshallah, we will establish the non-communal golden Bangladesh of the dream of the father of the nation free from hunger, poverty and illiteracy.

I pray to Almighty God that the members of the Armed Forces contribute more to the defense of the country and the construction of the country, being strong in honesty, devotion, patriotism and professionalism. I wish happiness, peace and well-being to all members of the Armed Forces and their families.

God bless you.

Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu

May Bangladesh live forever.
