US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also visited the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. He made a surprise visit to the disputed territory last Thursday. It was the first visit by a leading American diplomat to the Golan Heights.
Like Donald Trump, Mike Pompeo is known as an extreme pro-Israelist. He has made several comments against Palestine but has come to the discussion at different times. Previously, he compared the pro-Palestinian BDS movement to cancer.
Pompeo was accompanied by Israel’s Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi on his visit to the Golan Heights. They got there by helicopter. “It cannot be denied that it is part of Israel,” Pompeo said. President Donald Trump has recognized this fundamental issue.
In 1967, Israel occupied the Golan Heights from Syria in a six-day war. Last year, ignoring the international community, the administration of President Donald Trump recognized the Golan Heights as Israeli territory. “Think about it, if it was still occupied by Syria, Israel would be under threat just like the West,” Pompeo said.
