Village elders have married a 12-year-old girl to a 65-year-old man in Dewanganj of Jamalpur. The incident took place in the village of Boyrapara in Charamkhawa, a union of the Upazila on Wednesday. If the old man disagrees with the marriage, it is alleged that he was persuaded by 10 lashes.
According to locals, the child victim is a fifth-grade student from the local Qawmi madrassa. She fell in love with Shahin, 18, a grandson of Mohir Uddin from the same village. At one point, the teenager became pregnant with Shaheen. Later, she had an abortion 10-15 days ago.
When the matter came to light, the local matabbars mediated and imposed the crime of grandson on Dada Mohir Uddin. If he did not agree to the marriage, old Mohir Uddin was persuaded with 10 lashes.
Neighbors said that Mohir Uddin’s first and second wives had died. He was married for the third time 26 years ago. He is the father of 6 children. Mohir can’t speak properly now, his vision is blurry. He is in dire straits with his fourth wife of 12 years.
Mohir Uddin said: ‘I am innocent. The village matabbars have put a death sentence around my neck at this old age. Joynal Abedin Nadu, a local UP member, one of the arbitrators of the arbitration, said: “According to the child’s statement, the elderly Mohir Uddin was beaten with 10 lashes and given in marriage according to the Shariat.”
Upazila Nirbahi (UN) officer Abdullah bin Abdur Rashid said: ‘I have heard of the incident. Necessary steps are being taken in this regard.
Dewanganj OC NM Moinul Islam Police Station said: ‘I heard about the incident. However, no one complained. Action will be taken if any complaints are received.
