India and China oppose UN resolution on Rohingya crisis

DHAKA: The third committee of the UN General Assembly passed a resolution for the fourth time with a large vote to resolve the Rohingya crisis urgently.

The resolution, titled “The Human Rights Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar,” was approved by a large vote on 18 November.

The OIC and the European Union raised the issue jointly, and 104 countries sponsored it. 132 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 9 countries voted against. And 31 countries abstain from voting.

Russia, China, Myanmar, Belarus, Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Zimbabwe and Laos are among the countries that voted against the proposal. Countries that did not vote include neighboring India, the SAARC countries, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Venezuela voted against the proposal.

Rabab Fatima, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, thanked the international community for its continued support for the UN resolution.

He said the proposal raises new problems, such as a temporary ruling by the International Court of Justice, the launch of an investigation by the International Criminal Court, and the continued deprivation of Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar’s national elections.

The resolution also called on Myanmar to take action on specific issues. The issues are: uncovering the root causes of the problem, including granting citizenship to the Rohingya, ensuring the safe and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya by creating an environment conducive to their return, and ensuring the accountability of those responsible for them. crimes against the Rohingya as a measure of confidence in return.
