There was a robbery on a passenger launch named MV Maqbool-2 bound for Chandpur from Narayanganj. Naval police say the boat had about 150 passengers on board. Between eight and ten robbers were launched with speedboats with domestic weapons. They took around a hundred mobile phones, several lakhs of rupees and goods.
The incident took place around 11pm on Thursday (November 19) at the mouth of the Meghna River on the Munshiganj and Chandpur border. Members of the Gazaria Naval Police Outpost confirmed the information at 9 am on Friday (November 20).
Several passengers and locals on the boat complained that a thief was the first to enter the boat by speedboat. After a while, 10-12 thieves entered the boat in two more speedboats. They then fired blank shots, causing panic among the passengers. Later they looted hundreds of mobile phones, cash, gold ornaments and goods. The looting lasted more than 30 minutes. Towards the end, when the passengers screamed, many blank shots were fired and then fled. The night before the weekly vacation began, most of the boat’s passengers were employees, and the boat was packed to the brim.
Mujibur Rahman, in charge (current duty) of the Gazaria Naval Police Outpost, said a passenger speedboat named MV Maqbool-2 was en route from Narayanganj to Chandpur with about 150 passengers at 9pm. After disembarking at Gazaria Ghat in Munshiganj, the passengers again set out on their journey to Chandpur. Along the way, a group of eight to 10 thieves entered the motorboat with a speedboat in the Shatnal area at the mouth of the Meghna River around 11:45 pm. They threatened the passengers with domestic weapons. He then looted at least 30 mobile phones, several lakhs of rupees and belongings and fled. None of them could be apprehended.
He said some locals reported to the naval police and rushed to the scene in a speedboat. No complaints were received from passengers in this incident. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.
