Chapainawabganj: The boat lost control and overturned in the pond due to speeding on a narrow and broken road with 65 bags of rice and 18 passengers. Nine passengers died when they were crushed under a sack of rice.
The accident took place around 5:30 am on Thursday (November 19) in the Gazipur area of the Daipukhuria union in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj. Six more passengers were injured in the accident. The accident has cast a mourning shadow over the area. Also, anger is prevalent among the locals. Meanwhile, the Upazila administration has handed over 10,000 rupees to each family of the deceased for burial.

The deceased has been identified as Abul Qasim, 40, son of the late Nowshad Ali of Baliadighi village in the Shahbaz union of Shibganj upazila, Babul, 22, son of Erfan Ali, Tajamul Haque, 50, and his son Mithun, 24, and Karim, 40, son of Kabil. They are Milu (40), the son of Rehman, Atul Rahman (27), the driver of Bhutbhuti Masud (23), son of Mojibur of Sonapur in Daipukhuria Union and Ahad (22), son of Azizul of the village of Laughatta in Chakkirti Union.
The name of one of the injured has been identified. Hamdul (30), son of the injured worker Rabul. However, the names of the others could not be identified. The injured have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital after initial treatment at Shibganj Upazila Health Complex.
According to police, around 4:30 a.m. M., 16 rice pickers from the Baliadighi area in Shibganj Upazila lost control of their driver and fell into a roadside pond in Gazipur near Barik Bazar in Daipukhuria Union on their way home from the Barind area in Naogaon District. Seven people were killed instantly when the vehicle rolled over. The other two died on the way to the hospital. In addition, six others were injured. When a local person called Yasin Ali at 999, a team from the Shibganj Fire Service went to the scene and began the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, the deputy inspector of the Shibganj (SI) Azim police station said a team of them identified the body and handed it over to the family.
Chapainawabganj Fire Service Deputy Director Saber Uddin said a fire service unit appeared after the accident and began the rescue operation. However, due to narrow and broken roads and pressure from curious locals, it was difficult for them to reach the site and carry out rescue operations. Seven bodies were recovered from the scene and another six were rescued and sent to different hospitals for treatment.
Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi (UN) officer Sabik-al-Rabbi told banglanews that the administration has completed the rescue operation in the incident. The families of each of the victims received an immediate payment of Rs 10,000 and the rice drowned in the pond was recovered and delivered to the workers’ homes.
Chapainawabganj Police Superintendent AHM Abdur Rabik, Additional Deputy Commissioner Tajkiruzzaman, Additional Police Superintendent (Shibganj and Sadar) visited the area affected by the accident. Each of them confirmed that legal action would be taken against those responsible for the incident.
