Dhaka: The state government and the victim’s family have expressed satisfaction at the life imprisonment of Majnoor, the only defendant in the rape case of a student at Dhaka University in Kurmitola.

On Thursday afternoon (19 November), the judge of Dhaka’s 8th Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children Court was removed. Kamrunnahar gave the verdict.

In addition, the defendant was fined 50,000 taka and another six months in prison for non-payment.

Majnu was brought to court around 2.30pm on Thursday. Majnu started a commotion at one point even though he was in a tight police cordon. He also tried to kill the police officers in charge of security. Claiming his innocence, he wept. Never again did the lawyers and police officers present continue to abuse the intention.

Faced with this situation, all the journalists and lawyers present 10 minutes before 3 o’clock in the afternoon were expelled from the room. Later, Majnoor’s sentence was announced in a deserted court at around 3 p.m. Majnu was sentenced to life imprisonment under section 9 (1) of the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children Act. However, he was acquitted because the charges of articles 394 and 411 of the Penal Code were not proven.

Special counsel Afroza Farhana Ahmed Orange has expressed satisfaction with the verdict. “We are satisfied with the verdict,” he said. We have been able to satisfy the court through the Majnoor Section 164 statement, DNA test report, arrest by mobile tracking, rape victim identification, and witness testimony. So the court was satisfied and sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment. We are satisfied with this verdict.

“We have informed the victim and his family of the verdict,” said Abdur Rashid, a lawyer with the Center for Law and Arbitration, a human rights organization that is prosecuting the case on behalf of the victim’s family. They are satisfied with this verdict.

However, Rabiul Islam Robi, a state-appointed attorney for Majnoor, said the prosecution could not prove the allegations against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt. Therefore, the accused did not obtain justice in the sentence handed down in this case. You can appeal to the higher court if you wish.

On November 12, the only defendant in the case, Majnoor, after defending himself and presenting arguments from the State and the defendant, set the date for the verdict of the same court.

Testimony in the case ended on November 5. A total of 20 of the 24 witnesses testified in court on behalf of the state.

On March 17 of this year, DB Inspector Abu Bakar Siddique, the investigating officer in the case, presented the charge sheet. The defendant Majnoor’s trial began on August 28. Then, on September 20, the testimony of the case began through the testimony of the plaintiff and the father of the rape victim. The next day, the victim identified Majnu as a rapist.

After getting off the university bus at the Kurmitola bus stop around 6 p.m. on January 5, an unidentified person grabbed the girl by the face and took her to a nearby location. There she was raped and physically abused unconscious.

When he regained consciousness around 10 a.m., he found himself in a secluded place. From there, he reached his destination in a GNC autorickshaw and was taken to the emergency department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMC) after 12 p.m. He later returned home with hospital treatment.
