The 31st BCS Police Officer, Senior Deputy Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anisul Karim, was arrested in connection with the death of the National Institute of Mental Health and Hospital Registrar. The Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) has demanded the unconditional release of Abdullah Al Mamun.
BMA President, Dr. Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Secretary General. Maryland. Ihteshamul Haque Chowdhury made this demand in a statement sent to the media.
The statement said that ASP Anisul Karim’s death at a private mental health facility in Dhaka centered on the death of the National Institute of Mental Health registrar. The Bangladesh Medical Association strongly condemns the arrest of Abdullah Al Mamun on November 18.
The statement further stated that on November 9, Anisul Karim went to the emergency department of the National Institute of Mental Health Hospital for treatment together with his family and a police colleague. The doctor working in the emergency department kept him under observation and later the doctor in charge of the residential psychiatrist (assistant professor) recommended that he go to the hospital after the examination. But the patient’s relatives did not admit him to the hospital but instead took him to a private hospital on his own responsibility and he died after being admitted there.
The statement said Anisul Karim did not die at the Mental Health Institute and no institute doctor was involved in the incident. The patient was even admitted to the private hospital where the registrar of the National Institute of Mental Health was. Abdullah Al Mamun did not see the patient.
In this case, Dr. La’s statement said that Abdullah Al Mamun’s arrest and pre-trial detention was completely imaginary, unreasonable, unfair and harassing.
The arrest and preventive detention of a government doctor without the permission of the appropriate authorities is said to have offended all doctors in the country. If an auxiliary medical officer continues to be arrested on the basis of a completely fictitious accusation without the direction of His Excellency the Court, the normal medical system may be affected.
Senior ASP Shipon was taken to Mind Aid Hospital in Adabar on November 9 for advanced treatment. Then there was no psychiatrist. Hospital staff forcibly took him to a two-story observation room on the pretext of receiving medical treatment.
CCTV footage showed him brutally tortured to death in that room. His father Fayez Uddin filed a case at the Adabar police station.
