The former mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GASIC) and BNP leader, Professor MA Mannan, has been sentenced to one year in jail in a corruption case. At the same time, a fine of Tk 50 lakh and a prison sentence of three more months have been ordered for non-payment.

The court also acquitted Golam Kibria in the same case.

ACC lawyer Mahmud Hossain Jahangir confirmed the matter to Jugantar on Wednesday, saying that the verdict was delivered by the special judge of the Dhaka division, Syed Kamal Hossain, on Tuesday. MA Mannan was present in court at the time. When Mannan applied for bail in court, the judge granted him bail.

It is alleged in the case that while he was mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (from August 16, 2013 to February 2, 2015), he embezzled 49 lakh 1,748 rupees from the Gazipur City Corporation poverty relief funds showing the grant and the expense of 999 false receipts.

ACC Deputy Deputy Director Shamsul Alam filed a case against MA Mannan and his associate Golam Kibria at Joydebpur Police Station in Gazipur on June 23, 2016.

On January 12, 2016, the ACC filed a charge sheet against Mannan and Golam Kibria. The Gazipur Court of Special Judges took notice of the case and transferred it to the Dhaka Divisional Court of Special Judges for trial.

Subsequently, on 17 January 2019, the Dhaka Special Judge Divisional Court brought charges against the defendants.
