In Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj, 10 houses were robbed in one night. The thieves looted goods worth thousands of rupees, including cash and gold ornaments from a wedding house. The incident of the mass robbery in one night has spread panic throughout the upazila.
The incident took place late at night on Tuesday (November 18).
The thieves raided five houses in Dakshin Para of Fatehpur Union, three in Nagra Para of Sadar Township, two houses adjacent to the Steel Bridge in Sadar Upazila and Baghanagar village.
According to police and local sources, the thieves raided Harun’s home in Dakshinpara de la upazila around 1 pm. After breaking down the door and entering the house, the robbers took everyone hostage at gunpoint and looted 40,000 rupees in cash and three gold ornaments. The thieves then looted 10,000 rupees from Mozammel’s house, 55,000 rupees and two smartphones from Mashkur Mollah’s house, 72,000 rupees and 8-10 ounces of gold from Faizullah’s house, and one ounce of gold and 8,000 ounces of the Abdul Hai Mollah’s house. And Abdul Hai Mollah’s house had a wedding ceremony on Friday. Thieves targeted gold and money ornaments at the wedding house.
The thieves raided Nazrul’s house in Baghanagar, Tipu’s house near the Sadar Steel Bridge, Nagrapara Mostakim, Tanvir, Muktadir and Rafiqul’s house. Although nothing could be taken away at the time, the assailants hacked and injured four people.
Regarding the mass robbery, Narayanganj District Police (ASP) Deputy Superintendent Mahin Faraji said: ‘Araihazar Upazila is a huge area. The tendency to steal increases during winter. This winter we will increase night patrols to prevent theft. Special equipment will be delivered to the points where the robbers are most active.
He added that the police would act in case of theft. Legal action will be taken after the investigation. He said the operation was continuing to arrest the thieves and rescue looted property.
