The body of a stolen 17-day-old newborn who slept on his parents’ laps was recovered from a pond in Morelganj in Bagerhat. The newborn’s body was recovered from the pond next to the house on Wednesday morning.
Earlier on Sunday, criminals robbed Sujan Khan’s daughter from Gabtala village in Morelganj around 2 am. After that, the police went to the scene Monday morning and rescued the boy. At the Morelganj police station, a case was presented on behalf of unknown persons. Police and locals searched the pond and other suspicious places in the vicinity.
Morelganj Police Officer in Charge (OC) said. Monirul Islam said that locals informed the police when they saw the boy’s body floating in the pond next to the house on Wednesday morning. The police arrived at the scene and recovered the body.
The body will be sent to the Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy after the investigation report, the OC said.
Sanjida’s mother, Shanta Akhter, said she fell asleep with her husband in the middle of the night around 11 p.m. Sunday. He woke up in the middle of the night and saw that there was no girl. They got up and saw the door to the house open. And the girl’s pillow is under the bed.
On Monday morning, the day after the incident, senior officials from Morelganj Upazila and the police administration visited the site and launched a search operation.
Police view the family dispute with suspicion in the initial investigation.
Earlier, in March last year, another child was stolen from the Bisarighata village in Morelganj upazila. Subsequently, the police recovered the boy’s body from the bathroom in a nearby house.
