The malefactors cut the wrist of a former BCL leader named Atiqul Islam Sumon in Gomstapur in Chapainawabganj. Sumon is an executive member of the central committee of the Chhatra League and a former vice president of the Rajshahi University (UK) branch.
BCL District President Arifur Reza Emon confirmed the matter to the media on Tuesday (November 18) evening.
He said Sumon was talking on a mobile phone at Islampur Bazar in Gomstapur’s Bangabari Union on Tuesday night. At that moment, the malefactors suddenly attacked him and tried to break his left wrist.
The wounded Sumon claimed that Rajib, Nasim and some others led by BNP leader Junaidul Haque Jim, Shahidul Islam’s nephew, former Gomstapur Upazila BNP Secretary General, and former Bangabari Bangabari Union Parishad (UP) president attacked him.
Atiq’s wrist was repeatedly hit with a machete during the attack. He was later rescued and taken to the Gomstapur Health Complex and sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RAMEC) with first aid.
Meanwhile, locals said that Sumon has been targeted due to conflict between the local Awami League and BNP supporters since the last parliamentary elections.
Gomstapur police said that the police had gone to the scene and that further action would be taken subject to investigation. A case was being prepared at the police station until the latest news was received.
