A new Hifazat-e-Islam Bangladesh committee has been formed through a conference amid opposition from followers of the late Amir Shah Ahmad Shafi. The organization announced on Sunday a new 151-member committee with Allama Junaid Babungari as emir and Nur Hossain Qasemi as general secretary.
The conference was held at Darul Uloom Muinul Islam Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong since yesterday morning. It was chaired by Allama Muhibullah Babungari, Senior Naib Amir of the organization. About 400 leaders from across the country attended the conference. However, supporters of Amir Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, the founder of Hefazat, were not seen at the event. None of the late Amir’s followers were included in the new committee. There have also been reports of not inviting them. The newly formed committee has shown signs of division among Hefazat leaders and workers from the beginning.
The new committee was announced at this Hefazat conference. The emir and secretary general were elected at the conference on the basis of the opinions of councilors from across the country. Although the names of 122 members of the 151-member committee have been announced, the seats of the remaining 29 members have become vacant. It has been reported in the conference that if any important academic from the country is left out, these positions will be filled with him in phases.
The new committee includes Maulana Zakaria Noman Fayezi, Secretary of Advertising and Publications, Azizul Haque Islamabadi Organizing Secretary, Maulana Mamunul Haque, Deputy Secretary General, Mufti Harun Izhar, eldest son of Mufti Izhar, Secretary of Education and Literature. Maulana Moinuddin Ruhi, deputy general secretary of the previous committee, the youngest son of the late Amir Allama Shafi of Hifazat and Maulana Anas Madani, secretary of publicity of Hifazat, have been removed from the committee. There are reports that none of them were invited to the conference.
Shaikhul Islam Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, founder of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and former CEO of Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Hathazari Madrasa, died on September 18. The council was held 59 days later, eight years after the establishment of Hefazat.
The conference, which began yesterday at 10 in the morning, received the opinions of some 394 councilors until 1 in the afternoon. At the beginning of the conference, Allama Junaid Babungari announced the dissolution of the previous Hefazat committee. A 12-member convening committee was formed at the meeting. The committee announced the new Hifazat committee at 2.30pm based on the opinions of all the members.
The 151-member committee was announced by Maulana Mahfuzul Haque, BEFAC Secretary General. Allama Junaid Babungari has been elected Amir and Nur Hossain Kashemi has been elected secretary general of the committee. In addition, a total of 151 members were announced, including Allama Shah Muhibullah Babungari, 24 advisers, 32 Nayeb Amirs, seven general secretaries, 18 deputy general secretaries and 10 co-organizing secretaries. However, 29 member seats have been vacated on the committee. It was reported that the positions would be filled after checking and ranking according to the advice of the newly elected Amir Babungari.
Meanwhile, Anas Madani, son of the late Amir Ahmad Shafi, and none of his followers were seen at the conference. Hefazat’s former deputy secretary-general, Maulana Moinuddin Ruhi, has already called the conference illegal. Early on Saturday, a section of Shah Ahmad Shafi supporters held separate press conferences in Dhaka and Chittagong and questioned the conference.
The administration has taken strict security measures in the madrasa area to prevent adverse incidents surrounding this custodial council. Hathazari Police Station OC Masud Alam said security had been tightened around the Hifazat-e-Islam conference. To this end, an additional police force has been deployed.
The new committee is motivated: Mufti Waqqas
The new committee of Hifazat-e-Islam was established at the behest of a special tribunal, allegedly Mufti Muhammad Waqqas, the Naib Amir of the newly dissolved committee and the chief adviser to the Dhaka metropolitan Hifazat, Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam. He made the accusation yesterday while speaking to reporters at the Askan Tower in Dolairpara, south of the capital.
Former Member of Parliament Mufti Muhammad Waqqas said: “The post of Emir of Hifazat-e-Islam had to be filled due to the death of Allama Ahmad Shafi. But the committee that was reconstituted in Hathazari did not address the issue. It would have been better if only one Amir had been named instead of Amir. “There was no discussion with me at first,” he complained. Not even a letter was delivered until the conference. Therefore, many scholars have been left out. I believe that this step has been deliberately taken at the behest of the special court to undermine the prevalence and universality of Hefazat-e-Islam. I doubt that those who do not want the ulama to stay together in this country have done so. ‘
