“She is a guardian of Bengali cinema, a huge banyan tree, under which the current world of Bengali cinema reigns,” Bangladeshi actress Farida Akhter Poppy, popularly known as Babita, told the audience.

The legendary Bengali film actor has died in a private hospital in Kolkata after contracting the coronavirus. He was 65 years old.

Babita played the role of Ananga Boo with Soumitra Chatterjee in Satyajit Ray’s 1973 film Ashani Sanket.

In an interview with BBC Bangla, he recalled his performance with Soumitra.

Babita went to Shanti Niketan in Birbhum to perform at Ashani Sanket. He said: “I was very young then. I was 15/16 years old. I didn’t know much about Soumitrada.”

“I have seen the film Apur Sansar. Before I had only made one film in Dhaka. Until then, I had very little film experience.”

That was Babita’s first trip abroad. And his passport was made to go to India to film.

“This is my first time going abroad. I was very scared at the time. One is acting in the movie Manikdar (Satyajit Ray). After that, I am working with a great actor, Soumitradar. I can do it or not!”

It was there that Babita met Soumitra Chatterjee.

“I saw him dressed like Gangacharan, with dhoti. Round glasses. I’m standing. I gave him a shot. Then he said, ‘Wow, you took a really good photo! Very beautiful!”

Babita said Soumitra’s praise gave her courage at the time. And in a very short time he adopted it.

“I saw him at leisure on the set, when everything was arranged, he was probably sitting and reciting poetry. I saw him exercising again. I had a lot of fun watching him.”

Referring to a scene from the movie Ashani Sanket, Babita said: “Not to mention a scene. I am taking a bath and standing. And Soumitrada is washing his feet. There will be a tram shot. The shot is like this: I will go on foot. I will jump. on his chest. And tears will fall. “

At that point, Ray told Babita that she really should cry without using glycerin. Mr. Roy said, “I’ll see what kind of shot you can give. What kind of actress will you see!”

Babita said: “Then I walked and fell on Soumitrada’s chest and tears welled up in my eyes. So Soumitrada, Manikda and everyone clapped and said, ‘Wow, it’s a wonderful photo, it’s a wonderful photo.’

“Soumitrada noticed that, what Babita, why are you rolling your eyes, what happened to you? I said Soumitrada is our Eid today, I’m filming today so I’m a little upset. Then he said don’t think anything, look at it what we are. I do. “

Lightning won the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival. Babita was also present along with Satyajit Ray and Soumitra Chatterjee at the award ceremony.

Soumitra met Chattopadhyay for the first time in the movie Ashani Sanket. Although they did not act in any movies together after that, Babita said she had contact with Soumitra Chatterjee.

He said, “I have a soul mate with Soumitradar. Whenever I go, he is probably shooting a movie in Kolkata. I told him my grandfather came to see you.”

He joked, “Did I hear Babita that you’re filming a lot in Bangladesh? You’ve been getting a lot of award tours lately! Of course we knew. It was only when you said the thunder that I realized that one day you would be so much bigger. “.

Babita, a well-known Bangladeshi actress, said of her colleague Soumitra Chatterjee: “She left but left her job. Will they ever forget? These images of movie lovers will remain in their minds.”
