Attempts to seize power by assassinating the Armenian prime minister

Former Armenian officials conspired to assassinate Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. They wanted to make an attempt to seize power by killing him. But the country’s National Security Service (NSS) has demanded that the plan be thwarted. The NSS said in a statement on Saturday (November 14).

Former organization chief Arthur Venetsian, Republican parliamentary party leader Vahram Baghdasarian and war volunteer Ashot Minasyan were arrested, he said. The suspects were plotting to assassinate the prime minister and take power illegally, and were already discussing new candidates in his place.

Prime Minister Pashinyan is known to have been under pressure for some time. Protests broke out in Armenia demanding Azerbaijan’s resignation after weeks of fighting that left control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Earlier this week, Pashinyan said he had no choice but to sign a Russian-brokered peace agreement to avoid further land losses. The Armenian prime minister has said that he will not resign even if he takes personal responsibility for the situation.

Meanwhile, ethnic Armenians leave Nagorno-Karabakh when the deadline for handing over land to Azerbaijan expires. Many of them set their houses on fire before leaving the area last Saturday.

Armenia says 2,317 of its soldiers died in the war with Azerbaijan. However, Azerbaijan has yet to report casualties.
