A man was killed in a ‘shootout’ with members of the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar. However, the BGB could not identify him.

The BGB says the dead man was a yaba smuggler. 2 lakh 10 thousand yaba, a domestic weapon and two empty cartridges from a pistol were recovered from the site. The man killed in the shooting is suspected of being a Rohingya.

The incident took place around 10:30 pm Friday in the Sluicegate No. 1 area of the Naf River in Teknaf. The commander of the Teknaf 2 BGB battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan, confirmed this information at first glance.

The BGB official said that last night a special BGB team was patrolling the Naf river with a speedboat. At that time, they saw three people crossing the waters of Myanmar into Bangladesh in a wooden boat. When the BGB members on patrol challenged them, the traffickers fired at the BGB members. The BGBO responded in self-defense. At that point, the two smugglers jumped into the Naf River and headed for the border with Myanmar. Later, a search of the scene revealed that one person had been shot. Members of BGB rescued him along with the boat. The victim was taken to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the doctor on duty declared him dead. His identity was not found. Two injured BGB members received first aid.
