21 leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliates arrested

Remand 21 defendants arrested in the Paltan Alijal Ahmed, Maryland Police Station case. Mehedi Hasan, AKM Fazlul Bari, Altaf, Naeem, Asif, Humayun, Masukur Rahman and Rasheduzzaman; Abdur Rahman Taher and Zakir Hossain in the Motijheel Police Station case; Abul Kalam Azad, Abu Sufian, Sohail, Hazrat Ali, Moinuddin and Abu Saeed were arrested in the case of the Shahbagh police station, Mahidur Rahman and Main Uddin Chowdhury were arrested in the case of the Kalabagh and Shafiuddin Ahmed police station and Medu Rahman were arrested in the Bangshal Police Station case.

Nine cases were registered in different areas of the capital for setting buses on fire on Thursday. 448 people have been charged in these cases. Most of the accused are leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliates.

Among the defendants in the case brought to the Motijheel Police Station is Ishraq Hossain, the BNP candidate defeated in the Dhaka South City Corporation elections. According to the case statement, the cases were filed under the Special Powers Act and the Explosives Control Act of 1974. There are also unidentified defendants in these cases. The plaintiffs in these cases are all policemen.

Walid Hossain, deputy commissioner for media and public relations for the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said two cases were recorded in Motijheel, two in Shahbag, two in Paltan and one in Bangshal, Bhatara and Kalabagan. These cases were archived yesterday and today Friday.
Nine buses were set on fire in different areas of the capital between 12 noon and 4:30 in the afternoon yesterday. Three of the buses that caught fire were from the government.
