Sajjadur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told bdnews24.com that there had been two cases in the Shahbagh Police Station involving burning of cars.

A case has been filed in the Kalabagan area for taking a procession without permission and ‘obstructing the work of the police’.

Additional deputy police commissioner (media) Iftekhairul Islam said that there have been four cases of car burning and violence at Motijheel and Paltan police stations.

The police official said a case is being filed in other police stations where buses have been burned.

Although details of the accused were not immediately available, most of them were leaders and activists from BNP and allied organizations, police said. A total of 15 people have also been arrested in these cases

9 buses on fire in Dhaka

Voting for the by-elections in the Dhaka-17 constituency in Uttara took place from 8 am to 4 pm on Thursday.

The first bus fire incident took place around 12 noon after BNP leaders and activists held a procession in Naya Paltan in the morning alleging irregularities in the elections. A bus of the Income Tax Department staff parked in front of Al Arafah Islami Bank, in front of the BNP office, was set on fire.

A total of ten buses were set on fire in Motijheel, Gulistan, Shahbag, Secretariat Gate No. 5, Nayabazar in Old Dhaka, Paltan, Bhatara and Azampur in Uttara until 8 pm.

According to the fire service, its personnel went to put out the fire after receiving the news, but no one was injured.
