Almost three decades later, the call to prayer was heard again in the town of Shusha in Nagorno-Karabakh. An Azerbaijani soldier called for prayers at a local mosque on Wednesday after the Armenian government handed over control of the region to the Muslim-majority country of Azerbaijan through a peace deal last week.
A video of Susha giving azan has already swept social networks. The man, dressed in an army uniform, is known to have been giving Azan at the historic Yukhari Gawhar Aga Mosque.
According to the Turkey-based Daily Sabah, Shusha was captured by Armenian forces on May 8, 1992. The city is very important because of its geographical location.
The return of control of Susha to the peace agreement signed last week is considered a great victory for the Azaris.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin on November 6 that he had regained control of Nagorno-Karabakh from the Armenian forces.
He said that after 26 years, the call to prayer will be heard again in Sushma. We have shown the world that Nagorno-Karabakh is historically the land of Azerbaijan.
A fierce war broke out between Armenia and Azerbaijan in late September over the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh. Previously, there were several ceasefire and arms agreements, but they did not materialize.
The two countries have been at odds since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. More than 30,000 people lost their lives in this confrontation.
Although the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognized as Azerbaijan, it has long been controlled by an ethnic Armenian group. After the war of the 1990s, Armenia occupied the region.
Although Nagorno-Karabakh declared its independence, it did not receive international recognition. As a result, it legally remained under Azerbaijan.

On September 26, a sudden confrontation broke out between the Armenian and Azeri armies. Despite months of diplomatic efforts, the fighting continued for months, with casualties on both sides.
Finally, a Russian-negotiated Armenian government agreed to relinquish control of Nagorno-Karabakh on Monday, securing a victory for Azerbaijan.
