Dhaka: The Kovid-19 epidemic reminds us that no one is safe unless everyone is safe. That is why we need to protect our planet by reducing inequality, alleviating poverty and reducing carbon emissions.

We need to intensify our multilateral efforts.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the remarks in a video conference held earlier this day at a high-level event entitled “Call to Action to Strengthen Multilateralism” organized by the Spanish government.

Sheikh Hasina said that there is no alternative to constructive multilateralism in today’s globalized world. This is the only way for the common progress of humanity and for international guidance based on law.

“The Kovid-19 epidemic has taught us that global prosperity depends on concerted action, unity and international cooperation. History shows that any deviation from the combined effort will bring disaster to humanity. ‘

Addressing the crisis due to the epidemic, the Prime Minister said: “We have already allocated 14.14 billion rupees to protect the livelihood of our people, which is 4.3 percent of our GDP.” Despite the impact of the epidemic, Bangladesh has reached 5.24 percent of GDP thanks to timely measures taken by the government.

The Prime Minister said that without global multilateral efforts, there would be no global recovery and it would never be sustainable. We should all refrain from doing national work detrimental to international peace, security and world development.

“Bangladesh is a champion of multilateralism and is working hard for international peace and security through maximum presence in the UN peacekeeping force and participation in peacekeeping. We have embraced the principle of “whole society” in the implementation of the SDGs, we are equally committed to the implementation of the Paris Agreement. ‘

Noting that Bangladesh is honored to be chosen to lead the 48-member Climate Vulnerable Forum for the second time, Sheikh Hasina said: “We have moved forward from the position of the LDCs.” The UN system has played an important role in this. It reflects our commitment and confidence in multilateralism.

Noting that a political declaration was adopted in Bangladesh on September 21 to mark the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, he said: “In the declaration, we have emphasized the responsibility of partnership and joint efforts for our integrated prosperity.” We have focused on driving the 2030 Agenda and implementing the Paris Agreement for the Sustainable Development Goals. However, strong multilateralism is needed to reap the benefits of these international elements and understandings.

The Prime Minister said that the spirit of multilateralism and international cooperation is enshrined in the Constitution of Bangladesh. It said: “We can enhance our independence and make our full contribution to international peace and cooperation while upholding the progressive aspirations of humanity.” ‘

He further said that the Father of our Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1974 also highlighted the importance of concerted efforts and the role of the United Nations. “The United Nations will continue to be the center of hope for the future in this world of pain, misery and conflict,” he said. Your comments remain the foundation of our multilateralism. ‘

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez spoke on the occasion. The Prime Minister of Sweden, Stephen Lofven, and the President of Costa Rica also spoke via live video conference.

The video was preceded by a speech by the President of South Africa, the Prime Minister of Canada, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Senegal, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia and the Deputy Minister of External relationships.

At that time a video of the UN 75th anniversary celebrations and a video of the UN Secretary General’s statements were shown.
