According to various media reports, he plans to change some of the policies followed by the Trump administration after taking office.
With Biden’s victory, relations between Bangladesh and the United States will be more positive than in previous years, said Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen. In particular, Biden announced the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, which he said would indirectly benefit Bangladesh.
Foreign Minister Momen said that even if the Biden government did not reinstate the GSP or the special trade facility granted to Bangladesh, some more areas of trade and commerce could be expanded. He also hoped that the United States would strengthen its moral support for Bangladesh to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
Commenting on the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister, “Bangladesh has some problems to do with the political values of the Democratic Party. That is why our relationship with the Biden government will be positive. The Biden government has a strong position on issues such as the Paris Climate Agreement, international trade and human rights. Bangladesh will benefit from this. As the Biden government is pro-immigration, Bangladesh will directly benefit from it.
Would-be immigrants to the United States also think that the liberal government will increase the chances that Bangladeshis will enter and live in the United States.
Asad Azim, a resident of Comilla, Bangladesh, has been in the US state of Arizona for three years. He said that since Democrats have historically been liberal, Biden’s victory is expected to benefit Bangladeshi immigrants in the United States in certain areas. According to him, this will increase the rate of issuing visas to Bangladeshis and the visa process will be easier.
Additionally, Asad Azim believes that students who go to the United States for higher education will have job opportunities after graduation, as well as the possibility of obtaining citizenship.
The U.S. immigrant visa facility was closed during the Trump administration. With the victory of Joe Biden, immigrant visas will be reintroduced into the United States and many aspiring Bangladeshis hope to obtain permanent residence in the United States.
Those whose visas have expired and are living illegally are also expected to have a chance to get valid.
In this regard, former Foreign Secretary Touhid Hossain believes that Bangladesh will get some indirect benefits even if it is not direct as Biden has won.
Joe Biden has said from the beginning that he will implement the Paris Agreement. The former foreign secretary said that since Bangladesh is vulnerable to climate change and prone to natural disasters, Biden’s return to the deal would make Bangladesh more likely to be compensated than before.
The Trump administration stopped funding the World Health Organization and the United Nations. Touhid Hossain believes that Bangladesh will benefit indirectly, as the Biden government has promised to revive it.
Citing international relations analysts and economists, Germany-based Deutsche Welle said in a report that Bangladesh could benefit in many ways from this shift in power in the United States. However, much of this depends on Bangladeshi diplomatic efforts to reap the benefits.
According to former divisional ambassador general (retired) Shahidul Haque, Bangladesh will be of special importance to the United States in the future.
“We can only hope that the United States does not look at Bangladesh through the eyes of India,” he said. There are many problems in India right now that Democrats don’t like. And Bangladesh will benefit from it.
