Azerbaijan has liberated Shusha, Karabakh’s second city, from Armenian occupation. The announcement was made by President Ilham Aliyev on Sunday.

In his address to the nation, Ilham said: “After 26 years, Azar’s call will be heard in Sushma.”

Shusha is a sensitive and important city in the Upper Karabakh region. “We will show the world that Karabakh is traditionally the territory of Azerbaijan,” he said.

“We are steadily advancing towards victory,” he said in a speech to martyrs in the capital, Baku. If the Armenian leaders do not respond to our demands, we will go to the end.

On May 8, 1992, Shusha was captured by the Armenian forces.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been embroiled in a new conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh since September 27. The latter violates the third ceasefire, mediated by the United States. The Armenian offensive has so far killed more than a hundred Azerbaijani civilians.

Internationally, Nagorno-Karabakh is a region of Azerbaijan. It is occupied by ethnic Armenian groups. More than 30,000 people died in the war between the two countries of the former Soviet Union in the 1990s.
