Without waiting for Donald Trump to acknowledge defeat, world leaders have congratulated newly elected President Joe Biden.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she hopes to work with Joe Biden on a “future partnership.”
“The United States and Europe will continue to work together to address the enormous challenges of our time,” Merkel said.
In a tweet congratulating Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron said: “We have a lot of work to do to address the current challenges. We will work together.”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was “interested in working with Biden and Kamala Harris” and congratulated them on their “good luck.”
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called Biden a “true friend” of his country.
“I am sure that relations between the two countries will be further strengthened after he assumes the presidency.”
However, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei did not show much warmth. He scoffed at American democracy, saying, “Whatever the outcome of the elections, there is a clear slippage in the American administration at all levels, political, civil and moral.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a lengthy statement congratulating Biden and Kamala Harris after tweeting, saying that the relationship between Canada and the United States is “unique, unique in the world.”
The governments of the two countries “will work together to establish peace and unity, achieve economic prosperity and address global climate problems.”
