The UAE plans to legalize activities that are not harmful to others. This will likely make it legal in the Arab country for alcohol consumption and unmarried couples to live together. In a country inhabited by expatriates, these activities have long been considered punishable. The country’s state news agency, WAM, said on Saturday that legal reforms were being carried out as part of attracting entrepreneurs and foreign investment. However, it was not announced when these reforms would be implemented.
Like other Gulf countries, expatriates run a large part of the economic activities of the oil-rich United Arab Emirates. According to the country’s national newspaper, although alcohol consumption, premarital cohabitation and suicide attempts are punishable in the country, they will be legalized through legal reforms.
According to WAM, foreigners living in the Islamic country will also have the opportunity to choose inheritance laws for themselves.
The United Arab Emirates will keep ‘honor crimes’ punishable even if they legitimize acts that are not harmful to others. Crimes committed to disrespect the family are mainly described as honor crimes in the country. The WAM also said that such crimes would remain punishable.
