Kosovo President Hashim Thaci resigned to face trial for war crimes. He has resigned to face trial in The Hague, the Netherlands, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The 52-year-old president made the announcement at a press conference in the capital Pristina on Thursday. The country declared its independence in 2008 after fighting Serbia. But hostility with Serbia has not abated. Present-day Kosovo waged a guerrilla war against Serbia under the name of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), while Serbia was included. Hasim Thachi was the KLA’s commander from 1996 to 1999 during the bloody war. The former guerrilla faces trial for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the guerrilla war of that time. However, following the accusations against him, he said that he had carried out his activities to protect the territorial integrity of Kosovo.

Nine people, including Thachi, have been charged in a draft case published in The Hague. They have been accused of killing at least 100 people. He has been accused of killing political opponents, including Albanians, Serbs, Romans and people of other ethnic origins. Please note that the country has not yet been recognized by Serbia.
