District and Session Judge Munshi Abdul Majid of Chittagong 6th Court for Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children delivered the verdict in the case on Thursday.
Sanu Mia, 33, from Nasirpur village in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district, was sentenced to death and fined Taka 50,000 for killing his wife Iti Begum, 24 years old.
The defendant Sanu Mia was present in court during the verdict. Later he was sent to jail.
Prosecutor Khandaker Ariful Alam told bdnews24.com in court that the Sanu-Iti couple’s five-year-old son Md. Hamdu Mia arrived in court that day riding on Grandmother Rokeya Begum’s lap.
“She was smiling childishly, spending time like this. She didn’t even know what had happened in her life. Her mother died for the dowry at the hands of her father. Today her father was also sentenced to death. She is not old enough to understand. this, but what a tragedy for a child! “
Lawyer Ariful said that Hamdur Nani’s family is very poor. But they held the child in their arms. If the fine is determined, it will be given to Hamdur Nani through the court.
Thus, a family became a victim of the dowry. It is very sad. It shouldn’t happen in the case of any other child. ”
Sanu Mia was sentenced to death by a court under section 11 (a) of the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children Act 2000, for allegedly killing his wife for dowry.
Additionally, with a fine of Rs 50,000, the judge said, the money must be deposited with the court after being collected from the defendant’s property.
According to the record, the defendant Sanu Mia used to drive a wheelbarrow and do other work. Since their marriage in 2014, he had been pressuring his wife Iti Begum for the dowry in various ways.
In November 2016, Sanu took his wife to a small rented house in the West Madarbari area of the Sadarghat Police Station in Chittagong. The murders took place in January of the following year.
Sanu Mia had beaten Iti Begum for the dowry and threatened to send her home if she did not bring the money. Iti informed her sister Khurshid Akhter about the incident by phone.
The next day, January 15, at one thirty, Sanu Mia claimed that his wife, Iti Begum, had committed suicide. Upon receiving the news, Khurshid and the police went to the scene. Sanu was arrested at the scene.
Attorney Khandaker Ariful Alam said: “Although Sanu claimed that Iti had committed suicide, her knee was on the ground. An investigation and an autopsy later revealed that Iti Begum had died of suffocation.
The police lodged a complaint in the case brought by Khurshid Akter in February 2016. Sanu Mia’s trial began on July 8 of that year with charges.
Before issuing the verdict, the court heard testimony from seven plaintiffs in the case. However, Sanu Mia did not testify. No one testified on his behalf.
