Arriving in Kolkata on a two-day visit to West Bengal on Wednesday, he and Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah will join a series of political programs over the next two days.
The visit is significant in West Bengal politics due to the state assembly vote next year. Amit Shah leads the BJP’s Bengali campaign in West Bengal. “The highlight of this visit is Amit Shah’s two lunches,” said a front-line BJP leader.
On Thursday, Amit Shah will have lunch at a tribal house in Jangalmahal, a tribal area in West Bengal. The following day, Friday, a luncheon for the Minister of the Interior was organized in a morning house.
Most of the people of this Matua community living in Bangladesh came to India long after partition. They have many problems because they are refugees. And then Shah will give a special message after having lunch with a Matua family, said a BJP leader.
Political circles think that the BJP had the support of a large part of the refugees in the Lok Sabha but now the BJP is concerned about their attitude. Because the citizenship law has not yet entered into force as promised. The BJP government has yet to grant citizenship to any of the refugees.
BJP leaders in refugee-populated areas from Bengal have repeatedly expressed their discontent within the party. Bangaon MP Shantanu Tagore has written a letter to Amit Shah. The BJP is trying to avoid any impact on the Assembly polls.
Not just the Matua community, but people across the state are waiting to know what Shah, the creator of the new citizenship law, has to say on the matter, said a BJP leader.
West Bengal’s chief minister and main rival to the BJP, Mamata Banerjee, has vehemently opposed the new citizenship law, which requires the granting of citizenship to all except Muslims.
“About 30 percent of Muslims live in West Bengal … so the citizenship law will be an important issue in the next election. Let’s see what Amit Shah says to win the hearts of the Hindu community,” said a political analyst .
